At Home

I am currently cooling my heels at home, battling to deal with being couped up in my office. Next trip should be around 1 November to Mauritius for some training on the software programme used on board the research vessel Dr Fridtjof Nansen. I'm looking forward to this trip since I have never been to Mauritius and it should be interesting. Just hope that we get some time off to explore. Watch this space!

Maputo

My one night at home was a welcome change from sterile hotel rooms but there was so much to do and before long my suitcase was packed again. I thought that I would be nervous flying this morning since I was flying with SA Airlink who have had a bit of a bad time recently with accidents and incidents but I was completely okay. Maybe 2010 is my year for having discarded my fear of flying completely but the real proof will be next month when I fly from Mauritius to Seychelles and back on Air Seychelles since it is thanks to Air Seychelles that I developed this ridiculous fear in the first place. What contributed to my enjoyment of the flight was that it was on another cute little turbo propelled aircraft, this time a Jetstream 41. It only takes 29 people and there were only 11 on-board making it really comfy. Locked in!

Since it is now high tide early in the morning and when we finish work for the day and there is not much beach available, I have had to resort for taking a small run along the road outside the hotel. It was an interesting change! I had to dodge the mud and the vehicles who drive all over the road but I really enjoyed it despite regretting having just had a couple of slices of cake for afternoon tea! No beach! Talking of afternoon tea, yesterday while I was munching on those pieces of cake I gazed across the water to Maputo and saw the MSC Opera. It really stood out against the city. The MSC Opera docked in Maputo for the day. This morning, after breakfast, I returned to my room to tidy myself up for the workday and as I walked in the door I put the key into the lock and turned it. What a mistake that was! Moving on

My last work day in Mauritius went really well despite the failure of one participant to show up at all. It was a really good experience incorporating another country into my project and now there are two others that need to be approached for inclusion. Knut Korsbrekke, from IMR in Norway,  arrived at the research centre in the afternoon and we made plans to meet in Flic en Flac for dinner. It was really great to get out of the hotel for a change and have some conversation about things other than fisheries - although we did discuss this too. It was a pleasant evening with a bit too much food and a lot too much alcohol but nothing too drastic. In among all the other topics that were discussed at length, he also gave me some really good advice for my PhD which was very kind of him. A good night out indeed. Today I am having a slow day.
