Thunder and lightening

I awoke to grey skies again today and on my walk to IMS I saw heavy clouds just out to sea. As I glanced at the horizon two massive bolts of lightening stuck the ocean and the thunder rumbled in. I decided it was time to stop dawdling and looking at all the cats lying about and get to IMS quickly. It was a good thing I did that because 10 minutes after I arrived the heavens opened in one almighty deluge! When I walked out of our workshop room I found a whole lot of people standing around under shelter watching the rain come down.

Of course this meant that we were not able to start on time at 08:30, We only got underway after 11:00! It was very funny how all the ladies in the group managed to be there on time but not a single one of the guys made it! Once the work started it went well and the group finished all the profiles by 16:00. Tomorrow we will validate everything as a group and then we will be done.

Tonight I am just going to relax a bit, maybe go for a short walk to the night market and back but generally take it easy. Good night everyone.

Maputo

My one night at home was a welcome change from sterile hotel rooms but there was so much to do and before long my suitcase was packed again. I thought that I would be nervous flying this morning since I was flying with SA Airlink who have had a bit of a bad time recently with accidents and incidents but I was completely okay. Maybe 2010 is my year for having discarded my fear of flying completely but the real proof will be next month when I fly from Mauritius to Seychelles and back on Air Seychelles since it is thanks to Air Seychelles that I developed this ridiculous fear in the first place. What contributed to my enjoyment of the flight was that it was on another cute little turbo propelled aircraft, this time a Jetstream 41. It only takes 29 people and there were only 11 on-board making it really comfy. Locked in!

Since it is now high tide early in the morning and when we finish work for the day and there is not much beach available, I have had to resort for taking a small run along the road outside the hotel. It was an interesting change! I had to dodge the mud and the vehicles who drive all over the road but I really enjoyed it despite regretting having just had a couple of slices of cake for afternoon tea! No beach! Talking of afternoon tea, yesterday while I was munching on those pieces of cake I gazed across the water to Maputo and saw the MSC Opera. It really stood out against the city. The MSC Opera docked in Maputo for the day. This morning, after breakfast, I returned to my room to tidy myself up for the workday and as I walked in the door I put the key into the lock and turned it. What a mistake that was! Moving on

My last work day in Mauritius went really well despite the failure of one participant to show up at all. It was a really good experience incorporating another country into my project and now there are two others that need to be approached for inclusion. Knut Korsbrekke, from IMR in Norway,  arrived at the research centre in the afternoon and we made plans to meet in Flic en Flac for dinner. It was really great to get out of the hotel for a change and have some conversation about things other than fisheries - although we did discuss this too. It was a pleasant evening with a bit too much food and a lot too much alcohol but nothing too drastic. In among all the other topics that were discussed at length, he also gave me some really good advice for my PhD which was very kind of him. A good night out indeed. Today I am having a slow day. I need to check out of the hotel at 11 am but my ride to the airport is only at 3 pm. So I am moving out of my room at the very last minute and then...
