I am sailing ....

Last night it felt like we were in Norway. The cabin was freezing cold and the temperature can't be adjusted so I really battled to drop off to sleep. There are really thick comfy duvets on the beds but the moment a body part sticks out from under the covers, it freezes.

Today was a pretty relaxed affair. Kerry and I basically got up for breakfast and then hung about our cabin for a couple of hours before heading off to the movies. I really wanted to see Avatar but the cinema was only showing it in 2D and not 3D so we ended up seeing Invictis instead. I really enjoyed it and sometimes completely forgot that it was Morgan Freeman playing Nelson Mandela. After the movies we returned to the ship and had afternoon tea. They serve tea and cake on board at 15:00 every day - what a pleasure! Then it was time for the safety briefing. There are 4 of us new people on the ship and the First Officer showed us all the emergency gear and we had to try on the survival gear. It was all very entertaining particularly getting into the survival gear. I want to sleep in a set though as it is really warm. I got to take some photos too of the trawl gear on the back of the deck and where we will be working.

All the rest of the crew and scientific staff were back on the ship at 19:00 and there were rumours flying around that we would be stuck in port for a while longer because the part that was needed still had not arrived. The harbour crew were already waiting on the quay when the part was delivered - it had been held up at Customs. With that on the ship, the gangplank was raised and we set sail leaving a really picturesque Cape Town behind.

After leaving the harbour we had a quick emergency drill to the muster station and then hung about on deck for half an hour before we gathered for the briefing meeting. This was just an information session telling everyone the purpose of the cruise etc and a few practicalities of working on deck and living on the ship.  One person dashed from the room towards the end of the meeting and Kerry rushed outside at the end. I have to admit that I'm feeling a little queezy at this point but am hoping that it will fade away soon.

Anyway I'm off to bed, first trawl should be on deck by 07:00 and the the work begins.

Take care everyone.

PS: Jo I have been told that the best green flashes will be seen in the second half of the trip.
